First, an excellent article about the lecture from the Johns Hopkins News-Letter: Sean Astin brings humor, insight and a bit of the Shire to Hopkins. The article covers some of the very early part of his talk that I didn't video tape, including the Barrymore reference. :-)

Here are my videos. Parts 1-5 are from the lecture, and 6-7 are from the Q&A.

As I mentioned earlier, by the time Joy and I got to the room where Sean was signing autographs, there was a very long line. There were two tables set in an "L" shape with Sean sitting at one, so brave Daughter just pulled up two chairs for us to sit at the other and wait until the line ended. At first we were about mid-way down the table, but gradually we moved our chairs closer to the end near Sean. Eventually, he started including us in some of the conversations he was having with those he was signing autographs for!

very long rambling so I don't forget anything plus several pics )

On Tuesday, Nov 17, Daughter and I went to Johns Hopkins University to see Sean’s lecture. We were escorted to our reserved seats, which happened to be in the front row, right next to 4 seats labeled “Astin Family.” We argued briefly over who would sit next to an Astin family member, and being younger and stronger, Daughter won. ;-)

But the real winner was John Astin, who got to sit next to Daughter!

Daughter and I decided to go to see the play directed by John Astin and starring Mackenzie Astin at Johns Hopkins University on November 14. We were both pretty tired and almost passed on it, but then a the last minute decided, oh heck why not?

As soon as we walked in the door and I saw who was selling the tickets, I knew we made the right decision. :-)))))))

Long squeey ramblings and many pics below the cut )

http://the217.com/articles/view/sean_astin_speaks_at_the_union

Some highlights:
Astin joked quite a bit about his experience in making The Goonies, mentioning that Karri Green was “so not” his first make-out, and adamantly stressing that he never has, nor ever will do, the “truffle shuffle.”

*is much relieved*

Astin emphasized that he learned a great deal from playing the role of Sam, and that The Lord of the Rings taught him a great deal about unity and fellowship.

"Soak it up,” he said. “And give much of yourself to it. That’s what I learned about fellowship in Lord of the Rings. Also, that there is an awesome power in unity; and . . . tattoos on the left side of your ankle hurt.”

First, the awwwww moment: A freshman shows Sean a picture from the set of Rudy. He is holding 1-yr old baby her! Her father had a small role in the film. Here he is signing her father's copy of the script.

Article, Q&A, and video.

Sean's next lecture will be at Johns Hopkins University, where father John Astin teaches! The lecture is scheduled for 8pm, Tuesday, November 17, at the Shriver Hall Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public, and is followed by a reception. (While checking out the link, note the other speakers in the series. Sean is in some pretty heady company!)

"It is a sacred thing to wrap yourself in the embrace of your friends. Soak it up and give much to it."
--Sean Astin

From http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/090109/uga_488340595.shtml

Sean spoke to an overflow crowd of 800 at the newly renovated Tate Center at UGA last night. The audience seemed particularly enthusiastic about "Lord of the Rings" (there were students dressed as hobbits, see article for pic!) which was the focus of many of their questions. Sean received a marriage proposal (he politely declined) and showed off his Fellowship tattoo.

From other reports about the net, Sean quoted Shakespeare, anointed the audience as honorary Goonies, and said: "What can we learn from Chester Copperpot, who went for his dreams and got crushed by a rock? Sh*t happens."

Sean will be appearing at the Hollywood Show at the Burbank Airport Marriott, October 10-11, 2009. They are apparently trying to get others together for a Goonies reunion.

There will also be "Babylon 5" and "Twilight Zone" reunions! :-)

Last Saturday, Sean did a Q&A session following the screening of "The Miracle Worker" starring his mom, Patty Duke, at the ANDKids Film Festival at the University of Notre Dame. His daughters Alexandra and Elizabeth were on stage with him. I've uploaded my video of the Q&A to Youtube, in 3 10-minute segments.

He's addressed the little kids with "Special Agent Oso", now he's aiming at the tweeners!

From http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/July2009/23/c8201.html
"THAT'S SO WEIRD!

Premieres: Wednesday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m.

Produced by Halifax Film in association with YTV, That's So Weird! is what happens when seven teens band together to save So Weird TV, a third rate television network, where the programming is even weirder than the name. So Weird TV airs commercial parodies, bizarre game shows and features regular guest appearances by celebrities such as Sean Astin and Michael Rosenbaum, athletes Matt Stajan and Jason Blake, as well as musicians, including Eva Avila."

More on the show from http://www.playbackonline.ca/articles/daily/20090123/weird.html
"The series features seven young sketch comedy players who operate their own tiny cable TV network, So Weird TV, in a high school setting.

Each episode feature sketches, a newsmagazine, fauxmercials, mock trailers and PSAs to target eight- to 12 year-olds who are no longer little kids, and not yet teens.

The comedy also parodies existing teen shows with short 90-second spoofs that include Depressi High, Really Smallville and Are You Smarter Than Darth Vader?."

From here.
" Actor Sean Astin, will be receiving $13,000 for his lecture, "Leadership and fellowship: What I learned as a Goonie, Rudy and a Hobbit named Sam," at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 in Plachta Auditorium. ... The prices ... include airfare and hotel fees."

There is apparently a cost for attending, but I haven't seen it posted yet.

This is the same topic as his University of Georgia lecture on August 31.

Central Michigan University certainly won't be short of any star power during the fall semester.

Bo Burnham, Sean Astin and Zach Galifianakis have all been confirmed to be performing different shows throughout the fall semester.
...
Astin will be the second celebrity, coming to CMU as a lecturer on September 8.

Astin is most notable for his character Mikey Walsh in his 1985 debut movie, "The Goonies," his portrayal of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger in "Rudy" and Samwise Gamgee in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Breed said Astin will be a good fit with what they are trying to bring.

"He's a good fit with as popular as those movies are," he said.

Senior vice president, Playhouse Disney Worldwide, Nancy Kanter said: "'Special Agent Oso' has launched stronger and faster than any preschool series in our history -- not just in the U.S., but around the world. This wonderfully playful, energetic series is all about problem solving, with endearing Oso enlisting kids at home to help solve the everyday problems of preschoolers everywhere."

Astin said: "I'm so proud of this show, especially because my kids have connected with it and that makes me cool in their book. I can't wait to start recording Oso's new missions for the second season with our fantastic technical team and my incredibly talented castmates."

Since its April 4, 2009 premiere, "Special Agent Oso" has been TV's #1 program in its daily timeslot, defeating Nickelodeon by 41% among Kids 2-5 (628,000 vs. 444,000). In addition, the series delivered Disney Channel's most-watched telecast ever in the timeslot on May 14, and on June 13 the series delivered TV's top two rated telecasts among kids 2-5 for the day.
