For those who haven't seen it, you can download the video (57 MB) of the July 2004 20/20 interview with Sean and Mackenzie Astin, and their mother, Patty Duke. It's not an easy interview to watch; they talk frankly about Patty's mental illness and its effect on her children. (Note: the video doesn't start playing for about 20 seconds.)

You can also read the story on ABC's website.

Some highlights:
Astin joked quite a bit about his experience in making The Goonies, mentioning that Karri Green was “so not” his first make-out, and adamantly stressing that he never has, nor ever will do, the “truffle shuffle.”

*is much relieved*

Astin emphasized that he learned a great deal from playing the role of Sam, and that The Lord of the Rings taught him a great deal about unity and fellowship.

"Soak it up,” he said. “And give much of yourself to it. That’s what I learned about fellowship in Lord of the Rings. Also, that there is an awesome power in unity; and . . . tattoos on the left side of your ankle hurt.”

Sean appeared on LA TV September 13 on the Chabad Telethon, looking absolutely adorable in a kippah (yarmulke)!

ETA: High def video of his appearance, with daughters Alexandra and Elizabeth.

(Sean's biological father, Michael Tell, is Jewish.)

Also, here's a video of Sean Astin and Keith Coogan being interviewed about "Toy Soldiers."

I downloaded it and put it here.

First, the awwwww moment: A freshman shows Sean a picture from the set of Rudy. He is holding 1-yr old baby her! Her father had a small role in the film. Here he is signing her father's copy of the script.

Article, Q&A, and video.

Sean's next lecture will be at Johns Hopkins University, where father John Astin teaches! The lecture is scheduled for 8pm, Tuesday, November 17, at the Shriver Hall Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public, and is followed by a reception. (While checking out the link, note the other speakers in the series. Sean is in some pretty heady company!)

Sean is interviewed by kids at Newsday magazine. I believe this was done when Sean was in NYC promoting "Special Agent Oso" just before the ICON convention; various topics are covered.

Be sure to watch the video!

Two months ago, Sean did a number of TV, radio and internet interviews in preparation for the April 4 premiere of "Special Agent Oso" on the Disney Channel. I posted about as many as I could find on my journal.

Yesterday I found one I hadn't seen before, thanks to the new Microsoft search engine with the unlikely name of Bing. It's a longer interview (~7 1/2 minutes), and includes adorable video of Sean recording Oso's voice.

At Collectormania in 2003, Sean Astin talks about dealing with last minute changes in the script, the evolution of Sam's character, and the mix of comedy and heroism.

If you missed the AMC special last weekend on the Tribeca Film Festival, here is the section on "Stay Cool." It includes a couple of glimpses of Big Girl that we haven't seen yet, and a bit of an interview with Sean as well.
