For those who haven't seen it, you can download the video (57 MB) of the July 2004 20/20 interview with Sean and Mackenzie Astin, and their mother, Patty Duke. It's not an easy interview to watch; they talk frankly about Patty's mental illness and its effect on her children. (Note: the video doesn't start playing for about 20 seconds.)

You can also read the story on ABC's website.

During Sean's Q&A at Johns Hopkins University last month, he mentioned the he took part in a Make a Film Foundation project to help a young boy make a movie.

A fund-raising party is being held for the foundation December 15 in Culver City, CA, and the trailer for the film will be shown. "Deep Blue" will be a combination of live action and animation. Sean plays the boy's father in the live action part.

The trailer in online now here:

MAKE A FILM FOUNDATION (MAFF) is a non-profit organization that teams film industry professionals with terminally or critically diagnosed youth to help create short film legacies. The children’s dreams are to write and star in their own film, and MAFF is committed to making their dreams a reality.

First, an excellent article about the lecture from the Johns Hopkins News-Letter: Sean Astin brings humor, insight and a bit of the Shire to Hopkins. The article covers some of the very early part of his talk that I didn't video tape, including the Barrymore reference. :-)

Here are my videos. Parts 1-5 are from the lecture, and 6-7 are from the Q&A.

Sean appeared on LA TV September 13 on the Chabad Telethon, looking absolutely adorable in a kippah (yarmulke)!

ETA: High def video of his appearance, with daughters Alexandra and Elizabeth.

(Sean's biological father, Michael Tell, is Jewish.)

Also, here's a video of Sean Astin and Keith Coogan being interviewed about "Toy Soldiers."

I downloaded it and put it here.

First, the awwwww moment: A freshman shows Sean a picture from the set of Rudy. He is holding 1-yr old baby her! Her father had a small role in the film. Here he is signing her father's copy of the script.

Article, Q&A, and video.

Sean's next lecture will be at Johns Hopkins University, where father John Astin teaches! The lecture is scheduled for 8pm, Tuesday, November 17, at the Shriver Hall Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public, and is followed by a reception. (While checking out the link, note the other speakers in the series. Sean is in some pretty heady company!)

Last Saturday, Sean did a Q&A session following the screening of "The Miracle Worker" starring his mom, Patty Duke, at the ANDKids Film Festival at the University of Notre Dame. His daughters Alexandra and Elizabeth were on stage with him. I've uploaded my video of the Q&A to Youtube, in 3 10-minute segments.

If anyone hasn't seen Sean's movie Toy Soldiers yet, I found a site where you can watch it online in high definition. https://crackle.com/c/Toy_Soldiers/Toy_Soldiers/2434364

You just have to plug in your birth date and you're good to go. There are occasional brief (13 second) commercials, but the quality of the video is really amazing even in full-screen mode.

Senior vice president, Playhouse Disney Worldwide, Nancy Kanter said: "'Special Agent Oso' has launched stronger and faster than any preschool series in our history -- not just in the U.S., but around the world. This wonderfully playful, energetic series is all about problem solving, with endearing Oso enlisting kids at home to help solve the everyday problems of preschoolers everywhere."

Astin said: "I'm so proud of this show, especially because my kids have connected with it and that makes me cool in their book. I can't wait to start recording Oso's new missions for the second season with our fantastic technical team and my incredibly talented castmates."

Since its April 4, 2009 premiere, "Special Agent Oso" has been TV's #1 program in its daily timeslot, defeating Nickelodeon by 41% among Kids 2-5 (628,000 vs. 444,000). In addition, the series delivered Disney Channel's most-watched telecast ever in the timeslot on May 14, and on June 13 the series delivered TV's top two rated telecasts among kids 2-5 for the day.
